Whither sharpening

There seem to be lots of articles floating around these days suggesting that "sharpness is overrated" in photography. I guess it all depends on the subject and the artist's intent.

In the realm of knives, on the other hand, sharpening is hardly optional. Unless of course you don't actually want to cut anything.
